Serving Syracuse, Utica, Auburn, Oswego and surrounding communities

The CNYPA Snapshot is our new bi-monthly blog that features a different psychologist within the CNYPA membership. The intended audience includes our fellow CNYPA members, as well as the general public – both of whom may be interested in obtaining psychologically-minded information and fostering connections with the wonderful psychologists who serve Central New York’s diverse population.

CNYPA Snapshot: Tanya Williamson, Ph.D.

I work at the Syracuse VA Medical Center. I am also an Affiliate Coach with Insight Business Works and I am the owner of my own coaching/consulting business; Initiative – Consulting and Coaching.

How did you become interested in the field of Psychology?
I won a Psychology research contest in High School.

Briefly describe your area of specialty:
I am interested in coaching individuals and organizations towards various goals. I am also interested leadership qualities that make leaders effective. My clinical interests include working with geriatric population. I also enjoy working with individuals with chronic pain and other health related conditions such as insomnia. Enhancing diversity and inclusion are also core values in all that I do.

Based on your specialty, what is one piece of advice for our readers?
Take the time to reflect on your areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.

Can you provide a recommendation for how our readers can begin to implement your piece of advice?
There are several coaching assessments that can help you with self-reflection and self-assessment. One might consider taking the People Map, the 360 Leadership assessment, or maybe the Big Five Personality Test.

Tell us something fun about you:  If you weren’t a psychologist, what would you be?
I would likely welcome you to the evening news...or I would perform with a dance troupe such Alvin Ailey.
